Abstract 

A classroom action research to increase learning quality of senior high
school biology classroom through implementing three cycles of role playing method
on the topic “Cell Structure and Function” had been conducted at SMA Negeri 5
Binjai, North Sumatera, Indonesia. About 45 students of 11
th
grade of Senior High
School were involved in this study. Questionnaire, test, and observation sheet were
administered to know  students’ ability, students’ activities and students’ learning
outcome. Teachers’ daily field-notes was also written as supporting data. The result
of  analyzing  data  showed  that  there  were  gain  of  students  learning  increased
happened on the three cycles. There were about 72.09% at the first cycle, 79.55% at
the  second  cycle  and  86.36%  at  the  third  cycle.  These  facts  implied  that  students
achieved learning outcome well on this “Cell” topic beyond mastery learning (75%).
By  observing  students’  activities  on  each  groups  during  biology  classroom  to
understand  the  concept  of  cell:  structure  and  function,  there  were  also   better
learning attitude including readiness, enthusiasm, responsibility, working together
and diligence. The result of  questionnaire  showed that from five statements about
students’  attitudes  in  biology  learning,  42  students  (93.33%)  agree  that  learning
biology make them happy. Thirty nine students (86.67%) like because of its subject,
75.56% students like to study biology because of its work sheets, 80% students like
the  role  playing  method  and  77.78%  students  like  the  class  activities.  This  study
implied  that  it  is  very  indispensable  for  biology  teachers  to  implement  various
method in their classroom. Role Playing method is a good alternative to explore
creative  and  innovative  students’  idea  to  enhance  meaningful  biology  classroom
activity. This in turn can promote student’s interest to achieve learning better.
